IRS Direct File Expanding to Include More Tax Circumstances

Phoenix, AZ – This 2025 tax filing season, more Arizonans will be eligible to file their federal and state tax returns directly online for free. Arizona is part of a select group of states extending its participation in the IRS Direct File program, following overwhelming enthusiasm from Arizonans who used its pilot program. Taxpayers described the process as “seamless” and “quick,” and said that they would use it again.

While the pilot year was limited in scope to the simplest tax scenarios, for its second year, Direct File is expected to support more tax filing situations, including more sources of income, deductions, and tax credits. Details will be provided as we near the opening of the 2025 tax filing season.

The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is once again partnering with Code for America who built the Arizona FileYourStateTaxes filing platform and will be working to apply the expanded eligibility to the state tool. Code for America is a civic tech nonprofit that works with community leaders and governments to build equitable, accessible digital tools and services

"In Arizona, we are putting money back in people's pockets by making it free and easy to file their taxes,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “I look forward to expanding this resource to even more Arizonans next tax season."

“The Direct File pilot proved that we can give Arizona’s taxpayers the customer experience that they want,” said ADOR Director Robert Woods. “Filing with IRS Direct File and Arizona’s FileYourStateTaxes is quick, easy, secure, and it's free.”

With Direct File, taxpayers begin by filing their federal return on the IRS’ tool at directfile.irs.gov. The tool walks them through interview-style questions to prepare the return, just as with other tax preparation software platforms. Once the federal return is completed, the taxpayer will have the option to click a button taking them directly to the FileYourStateTaxes tool to prepare their state return. Much of the information from the federal return will be populated into the state tool, creating a quick, simple, seamless experience. The FileYourStateTaxes platform is mobile friendly, and is available in English and Spanish.

Direct File does not replace existing tax filing services, but is another option for eligible taxpayers who choose to use it based on their own tax circumstances.
